ABSTRACT

This chapter describes an application of a suite of advanced technologies, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), digital imaging, digital orthophotography, and Global Positioning System (GPS) surveys to develop a Computer Mapping Program (CMP) for the sewer system of a local government. Importance and benefits of a needs analysis prior to implementing a full-scale CMP are demonstrated. Various tasks of the needs analysis are explained. Mapping, database, and computer hardware and software requirements are specified. The illustrative examples are taken from a pilot project for the Public Works Department of the Borough of Ramsey, New Jersey.
